Burn Residency: how it works?

Te world’s biggest DJ competition, Burn Residency 2017, seeks out the best-undiscovered talent from across the globe. Burn Residency offers undiscovered DJ talent the opportunity of a lifetime, a career jump-start that puts them onstage in a European city as well as a 5 weeks Residency in electronic music mecca, Ibiza. The crowned winner will receive a €100,000 contract – a direct investment into their new career as an emerging DJ. Each stage of the competition will be judged by a panel of industry experts and international DJs. BURN Residency has seen guest mentors and judges such as Carl Cox, Pete Tong, John Digweed, Maceo Plex, Steve Lawler, Luciano and Jamie Jones invest their time into the competition and offer candidates tips and tricks on how to build a successful DJ career.

To apply, follow these steps. Upload your mix to your Mixcloud account, using the artwork provided HERE and use the title: Burn Residency 2017. The mix you will need to upload to enter the competition must be between 20:00 and 45:00 minutes long. Pack as much into that window of opportunity as possible. Stay true to what you do. Complete the entry form and submit your mix via the Enter Competition tab. The final stage of application is promoting your mix… it’s time to get networking. The more popular your uploaded mix proves to be the more likely you’ll be shortlisted by the judges – favourites and plays account for everything. To be in with a chance to go through to the next round your mix needs to gain 30 favourites. Our expert panel of judges will then shortlist their favourite entries by seeking out the kind of qualities that showcase creative flare, commercial viability, originality and a distinctive signature sound. Citizens of countries and cities, no matter how far-flung, are all encouraged to get involved in the BURN Residency competition. If you can’t find your home country on our list of locations, then you will be competing for the ‘wildcard’ slot. Check our full terms and conditions here.

  • Cannot be signed to a management company
  • 18 years old or older (at the time of application)
  • Ability to speak and understand the English language
  • Computer skills
  • Owned mix 20:00-45:00 minutes long
  • Production/sound engineering skills will be highly beneficial for applicants.

You will only get one chance at submitting your mix, so ensure it’s your best self-sampled or produced sounds into the correct length: 20 to 45 minutes. Once uploaded and registered, Mixcloud’s technical team will validate the length of each mix. Make sure the set you submit fully represents your best efforts. If you change your mind, your attempts to delete or re-upload alternative mixes will result in you being disqualified from the running. Next, you must begin promoting your submission to ensure you garner as many favourites and listens as possible. So, spread the word to get over 30 favourites to be in with a chance to get through to the next round. Saturday 1st April is the deadline for uploading mixes, the most popular mixes will be shortlisted and the critiquing will commence. This evaluation phase of the competition will involve a jury who rank mixes by the top 20% of DJs who have collected the largest number of listens and favourites on Mixcloud. Again, if you break the rules and go off-piste by purchasing Facebook likes from fake accounts, you will be disqualified from the competition.

The bootcamp. Once we have collated all the mixes, our expert DJ jury will evaluate the mixes and will pick winners for the top five DJs per country, based on each competitor’s abilities on deck.
The top five DJs from each country, as selected by the elite central jury, will be invited to a live mix off event. Finer details can vary by country, so be sure to keep yourself updated on locations and timings as the competition heats up.
The contenders will be narrowed down to a short-listed 26 candidates – 1 mix-off winner from each country, plus any wildcards.
They’ll then participate in the first stage of boot camp – a four day test where only 16 will continue on to the next phase – a gig in a European city.
The 16 DJs will then travel to a European city, where they’ll get to perform at a BURN supported event. BE-AT.tv will live stream each event allowing contestants sets to be watched by thousands of people from all around the globe.
Next, the lucky 16 DJs will be flown to Ibiza to spend up to 7 days at the second stage of the BURN Residency ‘Boot camp’ in the world’s dance music capital, Ibiza. During this time, the competitors will attend lectures, workshops, DJ master classes and will undertake numerous production and performance challenges.
During boot camp budding DJs will be personally mentored by a string of BURN ambassadors, helping them improve and understand their craft professionally. This is a unique opportunity to grow and potentially win this competition.

The day of reckoning lands on the final day of the DJ boot camp. After a fun-fuelled, sun-drenched few days experiencing what life is like as a DJ, we will announce the three finalists. The trio will be continuing on to the clubs to play 5-week residencies. Once the closing parties are all played out and the sun finally sets on the summer of 2017, one DJ will be appointed the winner of BURN Residency, landing the grand prize of €100,000 to invest in their music career.

The winner. To ensure our BURN Residency winner remains on point, a one-year contract with a management company is on offer.
